How Google Maps ranking actually works
Google has publicly described local results as being influenced by three broad factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your business matches what someone searched for. Distance is how close you are to the searcher or to the area they named. Prominence is how well known and well referenced your business appears to be, online and offline.
You cannot move your premises and you cannot control the algorithm. What you can control is everything that feeds relevance and prominence: the primary category you choose, the secondary categories you add, the services you list and how they are described, the completeness and accuracy of your business information, your photos and products, the reviews you earn and reply to, and the consistency of your details across the web.
Our work is to get every one of those signals right and keep them right, then measure the outcome in customer actions rather than a single screenshot of a ranking.
No agency can guarantee a position in Google Maps or the local pack. Results depend on competition in your category and city, your service area, your profile history and factors Google does not disclose. We commit to the work and the reporting, not to a ranking.
What the work covers
- Category strategyThe single highest-leverage setting on most profiles, and the one most often wrong.
- Services and descriptionsEvery service listed explicitly, written the way customers search for it.
- Profile completenessHours, attributes, products, photos and business information filled in properly.
- Review signalsA workflow for earning reviews legitimately and replying to every one of them.
- Local consistencyName, address and phone details that agree everywhere they appear.
- Landing page relevanceThe page your profile points to, aligned with the service and the city.
The Google Maps ranking process
Four phases, each with a clear output you can see. Nothing is changed on your profile before we can explain why.
- 1
Local visibility audit
We map where you currently appear for your priority searches across your service area, and compare your profile against the businesses that outrank you.
- 2
Category and relevance fix
Primary and secondary categories, service lists, descriptions and attributes are corrected so your profile matches the searches you want to win.
- 3
Profile and signal build
Completeness work, photos and products, review workflow, local references and landing page alignment, sequenced by impact.
- 4
Measure and iterate
We report on search impressions, calls, direction requests and website clicks, then adjust based on which query themes are actually converting.
What improves when the signals are right
Not a promised position. A profile that is eligible to compete for the searches that matter, and measurable movement in what customers do next.
- Wider query coverageYou start appearing for service variations and nearby areas you were invisible for.
- Stronger local pack presenceMore consistent appearances in the three-result pack on the searches you prioritise.
- More profile actionsCalls, direction requests and website clicks, tracked as the real measure of visibility.
- Clearer service areasVisibility concentrated where you can actually serve customers profitably.

Google Maps Ranking questions
The questions we are asked most about this service, answered without the usual hedging.
Profile corrections such as categories, services and business information can be reflected within days. Competitive movement in the local pack is slower and is reviewed over months rather than days, because it depends on signals that accumulate. We report monthly so you can see the direction of travel rather than waiting for a single result.
If you are a service-area business, your profile can be configured to cover the areas you genuinely serve, and relevance and prominence then carry most of the weight. What we will not do is create a fake address or a virtual office listing to fake proximity, because that is a policy violation and the most common cause of suspension we see.
Reviews contribute to prominence, and review content also helps Google understand which services you actually provide. Just as importantly, your rating and your replies are what a customer reads before deciding to call. We build a workflow for earning reviews legitimately and responding to all of them. We never buy, incentivise or fabricate reviews.
Distance is a real factor, so a business on the edge of a city will rarely outrank a well-optimised competitor in the centre for a centre-based search. What it can do is dominate the searches around its own area and for the specific services where competitors are weak. That is usually where the profitable enquiries are anyway.
